I hear from contractors on a daily basis that tell be that they have no home life, they are working 80 to 100 hours per week and they do not remember the last time that they had a vacation. They are having the same problem; data overload. Sadly, with a little bit of planning, setup and implementation of some good construction software, most of their problems would vanish.

Today, contractors can employ large numbers of craftsmen, which creates a complex and time-consuming payroll process. Accurate project estimates, schedules, and cost and time control activities require significant amounts of data for maximum results, and cannot possibly processed properly without effective construction software.

Without construction software to assist them in their daily activities, many contractors are small businesses that might be overwhelmed by the task of data information management. These businesses tend to focus more on marketing, sales, and production rather than record keeping and data information processing. Tragic financial loss or even financial devastation can result for the company if this issue is not addressed.

However, computers and the proper accompanying estimating, project management and construction software allows the contractor the opportunity to manage this information stream. Construction software can process, manipulate, store, and print information, but the result of the output is only as good as the value of the data input. Costs for hardware and effective construction software are easily within the reach of virtually all contractors’ budgets.

While many contractors have computerized their financial accounting, a lesser number have automated the project management functions. Managing a construction project incorporates several activities including:

* Construction Estimating

* Scheduling

* Job cost control

Construction estimating involves taking off project work quantities and determining the cost of labor, material, equipment, and overhead. It is a time consuming process that is prone to errors because of the many parameters. Proper construction estimating software will improve the accuracy of the final bid document and significantly cut the amount of time needed to prepare the estimate.

The construction estimating software incorporates several estimating tools:

* Computer aided design

* Process math calculations and formulas

* Data base of past performances that improve forecasting and costing estimates

* ‘What if’ analysis to study the estimates under different assumed future events

Construction software CAD programs enable the user to prepare computerized drawings for the project that can be read to perform quantity takeoffs. Many software vendors supply CAD programs. The other three tasks are performed by two different approaches to construction software: general application and industry. Usage is pretty evenly divided between the two.

Planning and scheduling construction software enables the contractor to:

* Plot planned project schedules

* Perform critical path method calculations

* Plot and manage resources

* Plot and manage cash flow

* Update project in a timely and accurate manner

Ideally, the scheduling construction software program interfaces with the construction estimating function so the two are performed in conjunction with each other. Unfortunately, many construction software vendors provide one or the other, but not both, even though the programs often interface.

There are several factors to consider when selecting a planning and scheduling construction software program:

* Number of activities to input

* Ability to update program

* Resource algorithms available

* Popularity of program with clients

* Ability to interface with estimating software

* Ability to interface with control function

* Ease of data entry

* Number and types of reports available

Job costing construction software provides a report on the status of a project and associated overruns or under runs based on input data such as labor time and quantities in place. The computerization of this function should be simple and linkable to your other estimating and proposal construction software. Construction software should definitely be selected by the contractor on the basis that it totally integrates his or her accounting, estimating and project management functions.

At the least, the contractor should not settle for construction software that cannot link to all construction software management functions.

The construction industry has seen the most profitable growth in the past decade than any other industry. The construction business is made up of architects, implementation team, project managers, and finally the actual construction workers. The actual project is also headed by the company funding the project which has the most say in how much capital is going to be issued to any single project. When it comes down to it the actual construction workers are the ones making the entity while the others are doing the behind the scenes work. When you think about it, the construction workers play an integral piece of the puzzle in completing and finishing a project. Besides the architects who actually think up and plan the project, the construction workers are the only other people on the team who have hands on access. You can always find new management, gain new capital, but you cannot get other people who are not efficient in construction work to complete the job. Think about it, if you contracted a Marketing Team to come and work on a construction site could they do it? I think not. However, that analogy is a two sided street. If you sent a construction team to work on a marketing plan, could they complete it? When you think about jobs in this sense you must value the work of another to its comparative advantage and then you will get the real worth of the work.

Construction workers adhere to the elements that they are put under whether it is extreme hot, cold, rain or snow. There is no downtime for construction work because the elements are not strong enough to deter them from completing the project. When the elements arrive at a construction site, many construction workers get injured. It is very easy for a mishap to occur on a construction site because of all of the dangerous present. One must be aware of all the hazards that are prominent at the worksite and do everything they can to avoid them. Construction workers must also face the brunt of the injury for most construction workers do not get benefits. However, if any injury is due to the negligence on behalf of another worker they can file a lawsuit. If you have been injured at the fault of another construction worker, contact a Bronx Construction Accident Lawyer Today.

Safety and equipment are the two most important elements that a construction company should provide to their workers. Without proper safety standards in regulation it is very easy for construction workers to be injured. Also if shoddy equipment is being supplied to the workers, as in the case of the crane accidents, injury is going to be very prone on happening. Bronx construction accident lawyers have the experience in dealing with insurance companies that hold the key to unlocking good settlement figures. Bronx Construction Accident Lawyers also have the knowledge to determine how to figure out who is negligent in the case. Therefore if you have been hurt in a construction accident, contact a Bronx Construction Accident Lawyer today.

To fill any one of the many Construction Management jobs around, you need to have the right background for it. This means having the right academic credentials for those types of Construction Management jobs, enough years of practical hands-on experience in at least specialty among Construction Management jobs, and even a record for pursuing continual learning opportunities when possible (maybe for an additional special area in Construction Management jobs.) Let us focus first on Construction Managers for our analysis of training for Construction Management jobs.

Construction Management jobs like that of a Construction Manager are two-fold in scope: you must possess the technical knowledge and skills for the job; and you must know how to manage people too. That is where the difficulty in Construction Management jobs comes in –people are flawed and lacking in some departments while exhibiting strength in others. This means the best candidate for the job may be one of the nastiest overseers you have ever met, but man, does he know construction! On the other hand, you might wind up with a candidate who is an all-around good guy (the type of colleague you would readily invite over to your house to meet your family) but who is completely inept and incompetent in technical issues. In a case like this, the better person for the job would be the nasty candidate (though you can always keep in touch with the nicer candidate for leisure pursuits, like joining a weekend bowling club together maybe.)

The technical training you need to be a competent Construction Manager would involve being a college or university graduate of either civil engineering, construction management, or construction science. Here is where some problems at work also start – there are some employees who literally worked their way up from the grungiest lowliest Construction Management jobs in the construction firm and toiled for years just to get to that post. Then, all of a sudden, the top brass go and hire some young yet very smart college graduate and put that new hiree in a higher position than that held by the older employees. Don’t laugh –this is an all-too-common situation in many companies. The older employees who started at rock bottom in the company may resent their new Construction Manager for being a) young, b) smart, c) very competent, and d) now has become their new boss. Filing in vacancies for Construction Management Jobs with employees who are younger than their subordinates has been proven to be a reason to expect problems in the future. It is more of a psychological and social problem though than a technical construction problem.

To resolve this problem, there are employers offering Construction Management jobs who specify a range of the desired age of any candidates, as well as minimum number of years of experience in the same line of work. This helps give the new hiree a leg up when it comes to integrity and perceived competence for the position. (And it also passes the buck for training a new college graduate to a different firm which is wiling to absorb the risks that come with hiring inexperienced college graduates for Construction Management Jobs.)

Is experience the best teacher for Construction Management Jobs then? Not necessarily – there are things about Construction Management Jobs you can learn by theory that you will never learn through experience. The best learning process though is one that can harness both formal education and experience together to give the organization the best possible Construction Manager they can get at that time.

There are endless safety rules and regulations for construction sites to provide for a workers safety.

2009 will be a highly competitive year for the construction industry as companies compete for a reduced number of projects. The struggling economy has resulted in tighter budgets and delayed spending on many projects, which is leading to increased competition during the construction bid process. For owners who want a higher level of transparency and efficiency, and for contractors who want to differentiate themselves from the competition, the implementation of wireless construction cameras creates an immediate and effective means to meet these needs.

Construction owners utilize construction cameras to provide documentation of project progression. A great tool to give stakeholders peace of mind as well as to better communicate the project status with the entire project team. Below are some general benefits to owners:
– Document the construction project’s progression
– Impressive relationship tool for investors, banks and other funding sources
– Increase efficiencies (improved documentation, communication with project team, reduction of travel time, enforce accountability, obtain image assets for marketing collateral)

The benefits of a construction camera are not limited exclusively to owners of construction projects. General contractors responsible for the day to day operations and progress of the jobsite can also benefit from installing construction cameras. Below are some benefits for contractors:
– Improve scheduling of construction jobsite visits
– Reduction in site visits
– Accountability (Who’s working? How many? What time did they arrive – leave? Is the jobsite clean?)
– Project management improvements translates into more margin per project and protect the margin by avoiding costly delays

Construction Cameras are not equal:
It is important to remember that not all construction cameras are equal. There are a wide variety of variables you need to consider when selecting a construction camera . When selecting construction camera options make sure you are being conscious of the following:
1. Ease of camera setup
2. Reliability
3. Quality of the image
4. Method of data transfer
5. Analysis and Reporting

Ease of Camera Setup:
Too often overlooked is the ease that the camera can be setup. Ask yourself, who will be setting up this camera? Complications in the camera systems can vary greatly from company to company. When possible, look for a company that has a turnkey solution.

Reliability:
The overall package depends on the reliability of the service. There are many factors that can make a camera reliable, which means it is important you try to determine if there is a weak link in the camera company’s solution. Will the photos be captured and archived consistently? Do you have to perform regular maintenance to the camera? Is there a lifetime warranty, so you can invest once and then reuse on other projects. If the weather is not cooperating, will the image quality be sufficient?

Quality of the Image:
A construction webcam , for many is vastly different to what the average consumer thinks of when he hears the word “webcam.” Some of today’s construction webcams are capable of high resolution images. The better the quality image, the more decision making information you will be able to obtain.

Method of Data Transfer:
Jobsites can be scattered in unusual places. Accessibility to transferring the images can create challenges at times. Advances in cellular technology have allowed high resolution images to be transferred through mobile signals. You’ll want to make sure your webcam is reliable and able to transfer images without service interruption.

Analysis and Reporting:
Having a dashboard to manage and monitor the progress of the jobsite is essential. Look for reporting tools such as time elapsed comparisons and communication methods that can inform the project team of progress. For larger projects with multiple cameras you’ll want to ensure your dashboard can facilitate monitoring of additional cameras.

Next Steps: Finding a Wireless Construction Camera Vendor:
Each construction project has its own set of specifications and jobsite requirements that need to be adhered to. Whether you are a construction owner, or contractor, utilizing a wireless construction camera is a sound investment for the construction project. After several years of widespread implementations on jobsites, numerous owners and contractors across the country have obtained first hand experience on the benefits of having a construction camera program for project management. What used to be considered a luxury for some is quickly becoming a requirement to effectively compete just like Smart Phones a few years ago. Can you imagine a project owner or general contractor trying to efficiently and effectively communicate to the entire project stakeholders to ensure success? Incorporating construction cameras into the jobsite is a great way to create an environment of proactive project management and accountability. Contractors looking for an added edge in 2009 have another tool at their disposal to help differentiate them from the pack.

Infrastructure, the backbone of an economy, is what distinguishes a developed nation from a developing one. Be it roads, water supply, power grids or telecommunication, a good infrastructure facilitates the proper functioning of the society. We all know how fast the times are changing. To keep up with the pace, we have to prepare ourselves for the new challenges everyday. Knowing this, almost every nation is investing huge amount of capital in improving infrastructure today. The increasing number of construction projects in the US alone, is a testimony to the above statement. In today’s time, there is no need to invest time and efforts in building contacts. Every kind of information is just a click away. Today, many online portals exist, which provide information about the projects, companies, market, location and many more details about the current and upcoming construction projects.

Construction business is the in-thing in today’s time. Many private and commercial construction projects are coming up everyday. To give you information about the nitty gritties of the construction business, there are online portals which keep updating their databases from time to time. Targeting not only a niche community, but also the common public, these online portals provide the latest updates about the current construction reports. Construction, though seems like just a masonry work, is far from being a single activity. A huge amount of planning, designing and multitasking is required to execute the project well. A lot of things are to be kept in mind, such as the environmental impact, successful scheduling, budgeting, availability of materials and logistics, legal considerations and timely completion of the project to reduce the inconvenience caused to the public, during the whole process.

Bidding of tenders is one of the important stages of the overall construction process. There are different methods of construction procurement, like the traditional way of design-bid-build, the second way of design-and-build and the third, marketing contracting. To succeed in today’s competitive world, we need to know things before others. The updated databases of online portals provide the latest information about the construction project bids, which helps the bidders in investing/bidding at the right time.

Such portals also have a customer service cell, which answers all your queries in minimum possible time. Once you register on these portals, you get email alerts, construction project reports and company reports which give you an updated picture of the Construction Business regularly.

On the 6th of April 2007 the government introduced The new Construction (Design and Management) Regulations which are designed to improve the general safety of construction sites and cut down on the number of accidents experienced during construction projects.

This new set of regulations will replace two predecessors – The CMD Regulations 1994 and The Construction (Health Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996. Any outdated regulations were updated before the two sets were consolidated into a single new set of rules and guidelines.

Despite advances in construction and communication technology construction sites are still considered to be unnecessarily dangerous working environments, with around one third of all workplace fatalities occurring in construction and many thousands of injured occurring during construction projects each year. These injuries and deaths have a wide reaching significant impact with colleagues, family, friends and of course the unfortunate individual, not to mention the possible legal implications for the construction company involved.

The primary aim of the new regulations is to build construction health and safety into every stage of building projects from start to finish. The regulations apply to everyone involved with a construction project and stipulate that each must take account of health and safety. This starts with the Client who commissions the construction works and includes Designers, Principle Contractors, Contractors and Construction Workers.

Another aim of the new regulations is the discouragement and removal of all unnecessary red tape and bureaucracy which are since as a major contributing factor in construction injuries and fatalities. By eliminating hazards at the earliest stages of design and focussing effort where it will be most effective the new regulations should allow for more attention to be paid to important on site issues.

Whilst these benefits of the new CDM regulations clearly apply to construction companies, construction workers and other related professions, many of them also impact directly on clients who either do their own small scale construction and maintenance work or contract it out to others. If a person believes the new regulations do not affect them because they are not involved in the construction industry then they are probably wrong. For example, if the person has responsibility for any property that requires occasional maintenance work then, as the Client, they are required to comply with some very specific duties.

Within the new Construction (Design and Management) Regulations a domestic client is defined as anyone who lives, or will live in the premises where the construction work is carried out. Although a domestic client does not have construction health and safety duties under the CDM Regulations 2007 anyone employed by them on a construction project will.

Other roles also have defined duties under the new CDM regulations, for example:

Designers – this includes any person responsible for any part of the design work such as Architects, Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors, Engineers, Interior Designers or anyone else who is traditionally employed on the design stage of a construction project as a “contractor”.

Principal Contractor – this is the key duty holder responsible for including health and safety compliance in the overall planning, effective management and coordination of the construction phase.

Contractor – this includes any person who carries out or manages construction work as part of their business activities.

If a person is in doubt about the specific implications of the new CDM Regulations on their own construction project and require guidance about their own responsibilities, it would be advisable to employ the services of professional construction health and safety consultants.

This is Chook, our male Superb Lyrebird at Adelaide Zoo. We’ve had a lot of construction going on lately and Chook has picked up many of the sounds. You can find out more information on Chook and download free Chook ringtones here: tinyurl.com . We think we can hear the following sounds: 1. Hammer 2. Chainsaw 3. Jack hammer 4. Lawn mower hitting sticks 5. Leaf blower starting 6. Power drill 7. Wood saw 8. Human voices 9. Two-way radio 10.Worker whistling He makes lots of different bird calls …
Help answer the question about Construction
Can I get out of a building construction contract and an agreement to purchase vacant land?
My husband and I recently signed a new construction contract along with another contract to purchase vacant land in a housing development that the house is to be built on. We are in the process of applying for the new construction mortgage and we have not yet been approved. Since signing the contracts, we recently saw the first completed home in the development. We are not happy with the quality of the work by our builder and we don't want to proceed with him. We would like to build the house with another builder in another development. The land is still vacant and construction of the house is to begin after we obtain our mortgage. In the contract for purchasing the vacant land, it's stated that the sale is contingent upon the buyer obtaining financing. As I stated above, we have only applied for the mortagage and have not closed on it. I'd appreciate any input on this matter.
